Throughout our lives our identity is constantly fractured and shifting; our different selves rise to the surface and fall away, surge forward only to be repressed, or come into conflict with each other in the ebb and flow of psychological and emotional experience.
from the Introduction by Peter Collier to In Search of Lost Time, Book 6: The Fugitive by Marcel Proust

Maybe we never had a chance.
[First] Prev <–-> Next
#poorly drawn mdzs#mdzs#wei wuxian#lan wangji#a-yuan#Ultimately...despite how hard we try to reach people - sometimes it just is not possible.#Sometimes all you can do is wish that things could have been different. You pen a note with all the things you want to say -#and then you let it go. The words stay unsent and unspoken. You just watch the rift between you grow until you're too far away to try again#It is a sad end! It is two people who want to be closer but do not have the right capacity to do anything but shut doors.#Worse yet; it's two people who feel it is not their place to try and impose anything more.#It takes so long to heal from endings like that. You never get enough closure when there is still a faint hope of 'another day'.#It's a false amicability. It's closing a door and telling yourself that at least the windows are unlocked.#WWX will keep up his friendliness as a way to hold LWJ at a distance. LWJ can only try to help so many times.#Speaking of tragedies of trying to help; Let's talk about the addiction metaphors in this episode.#WWX tells LWJ in fairly straightforward terms that he does not *want* do be doing ghost cultivation.#What he wants is to protect people - by any means necessary. If he had another option he would take it.#The path WWX 'chose' is one that is deeply mired in external shame and taboo. He jokes about it but it clearly doesn't feel great.#And I put 'chose' in quotes because just like many who find them selves in bad situations - the choice is an illusion.#He's adamant that this is 'his' choice. That he is in control.#Better to be villainized that endure the terrifying reality that you lack any ability to have choice anymore.#If he had the choice - truly had the choice - he would not be doing this.#You can't help those who don't want to be helped. So of course all LWJ can do is watch from the side. Offer a hand when he can.#This life was a tragedy and the countdown to it all blowing up started a long time ago...

Maybe my way of thinking about the innies vs outies isn’t how the show intended it to be interpreted but tbh I don’t think that the innies and outies are different people in any significant way.
Like people say “Helly is who Helena would’ve been if she hadn’t grown up as an Eagen” but like I don’t think that’s true. I think Helly is the way she is specifically because of who Helena is. When Helly first wakes up, her personality is immediately front and center. She does NOT act the way Mark and Irving were expecting her to, which kind of freaks them out. Helly bangs on the door, initially refuses the survey, shouts to be let out, throws a speaker directly at Mark’s head, etc. etc. Helena is the one who developed that personality throughout her life. The difference is that Helly isn’t making a conscious effort to control herself to try to live up to the role that she is supposed to fill.
If the innies truly were different people, then they would start out as completely blank slates and develop a personality from there. The innies and outies would be like twins separated at birth, similar in appearance but entirely different people with personalities formed through their different lives. But the Innies and outies demonstrably aren’t entirely different people. Their personalities are consistent. Dylan loves his wife as both an outie and an innie. Irving longs for connection with Burt as both an outie and an innie. Mark grieves Gemma as both an outie and an innie, although he doesn’t know what it is when he’s an innie. The real difference is only what specific knowledge they have available to them. The difference in knowledge between innies and outies is what shapes the differences in their behavior.
the innies aren’t the outies minus their life experiences, they’re the outies minus the conscious memory of their life experiences. But their lives in the outside world absolutely shape who they are both in innie and outie form, because they are one person. At least that’s how I view it anyway.

If I have to read another fucking comment about how "marichat is better than ladrien because in the former they can be their true selves with each other" I'm going to commit a federal crime with violent repercussions.
Ladrien is another peak side of the love square and I'm tired of pretending otherwise.

gonna be sick thinking of this Mori and Dazai parallel of their canon selves vs BEAST selves and how their roles flip in Beast and Mori's the one in the light
Beast Mori's actions took a turn for the better as he now manages an orphanage and takes in Atsushi under his wing. He feels and expresses remorse over what happened to Dazai and wishes to not have it repeat, so he takes care of Atsushi. It's very human.
And then Beast Dazai's actions took a turn for the worse even if his overall goal was a good one, he still did it very questionably. Dazai's tormented by visions that aren't even his own, the friendships he formed and memories he made belong to someone else in an entirely different universe, but he's consumed by them. He took up being the boss at eighteen and made enemies out of everyone in order to do what needed to be done, and he didn't even want to be boss, but someone had to be.
Like, there is clearly a certain pull of darkness associated with being in charge of the Port Mafia, and I think there's something to be said about necessary evils and what it does to the soul of someone who manages the night. Each boss became a slave to the mafia, to the night, to the city. There is no them, their selves are consumed and what's left is a puppet to do what needs to be done.

I’ve never played League so I only know about their LoL dynamic second-hand but it is SO funny to me that Arcane took these two characters whose whole shtick is being enemies and hating each other, and said what if we made them cosmically intertwined soulmates who love each other so so much and never once hate each other, even when they are fighting over the fate of reality??? Jayce was screaming/crying/throwing up/etc while forcing himself to kill Viktor and he only did it because an alt version of Viktor made him promise to. Every time Machine Herald Viktor saw Jayce it was all hi Jayce I’m so pleased to see you. Hi Jayce let’s be partners again. Join me Jayce.
And it was beautiful and deeply romantic and also it was still these two guys who are basically video game Megamind and Metro Man.

That post I reblogged about Imogen '8 strentgh' Temult being fanonized as burly is mostly lighthearted, but it also reminded me how the fanon depiction of Imogen has shifted. Earlier in the campaign, when Laudna was perceived as the stronger of the two, the one who took care of poor little innocent, anxious, migraine afflicted Imogen, fanon-Imogen was this short, round, soft looking person. Now, as canon has made it very clear that Imogen is the (mentally) stronger of the two, the one who's trying to stop Laudna from spiraling, her fanon self has shifted into something more traditionally masculine, leaning into the farmgirl aesthetic of pants and cowboy hats and muscles, even as her canon design has only gotten more feminine with sheer dresses and skirts.
And I'm not one to pass up on fun fanon designs; I've certainly reblogged my fair share of muscly Imogen because I'm only human and Imogen with muscles hot. I don’t think these designs are done with any larger motive than 'she looks good like this'. But I also kind of think we need to have a conversation about how fandom keeps trying to slot these two characters in a non-heteronormative relationship into heteronormative roles of (feminine) soft, weak, innocent person to be cared for/saved and (masculine) strong, heroic, saviour taking care of them, however unconsciously it’s done.
